Tips to Increase your boiler life, reduce costs and increase reliability.

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Not everyone can afford a boiler change. At Average, it costs around £1800 for a basic boiler. For most working parents it quite a bit to take.

Boilers that are around 10 years old generally take 2 routes. First route is, they will start costing you more to run or they'll constantly breakdown. Second route is, they'll go along as far as they can until they are totally knackered.

There are things you can do to prolong boilers life, know your boiler a bit better and get more out of it.

Tip #1 - Boiler Service

A large number of boilers services are complete nonsense. If a boiler is serviced properly, it will rarely ever breakdown.

We recommend that you do get the boiler serviced yearly from trusted gas engineer.

Tip #2 - Bleed your radiators and fix your leaks.

Its NOT OK to keep topping up boiler pressure. You shouldn't have to do this regularly.

If you boiler constantly looses pressure, get it checked. It could be due to a leak in system, air, PRV passing, inadequate air in expansion vessel or even ruptured pressure vessel.

Get it fixed by a qualified gas engineer or you risk burning out your boiler pump a lot quicker.

Tip #3 - Magnetic Filter

If your boiler doesn't have a magnetic filter, you are risking a very expensive repair.

Over time, sludge is built up from rusting components of the heating system. This is accumulated inside the filter. In absence of filter it can choke your pipes and cause massive repair works (lifting of floor boards to trace sludge blockage).

Tip #4 - Mix it up

Try different blog formats each time. One month, post a day in the life, then try a How-To or a Q&A. There are many templates to help you get started.

Tip #5 - Inhibitor

Inhibitor was stop or prohibit the formation of sludge. If sludge is already present in your heating system, don't add inhibitor. Call a gas engineer and have your system power flushed, cleaned and then add inhibitor in the very end.

Look After your boiler ! If you follow our tips above you go get additional few years out of your boiler. However, if your current boiler are any older than 15 years, its time to get them changed to play your part positively on the environment.
